Treatments for Pigmentation
Cosmelan Peel for Pigmentation
The Cosmelan Peel is the gold-standard depigmentation treatment for melasma, chloasma, and stubborn pigmentation. It combines a professional in-clinic application with a home maintenance protocol to inhibit melanin production at the source. Cosmelan is suitable for all skin types, including darker Fitzpatrick skin tones, and delivers measurable improvement within 4 to 8 weeks.

The Messenger Peel by Biopark Medical is a regenerative chemical peel that addresses pigmentation, acne, and skin texture simultaneously. Unlike conventional peels, the Messenger Peel works at the cellular signalling level to stimulate skin renewal from within. It is particularly effective for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following acne breakouts.

Microneedling combined with targeted serums is an effective approach for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. The controlled micro-injury response stimulates collagen and elastin production while allowing active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the dermis for enhanced results.
Learn moreWhich treatment suits which pattern of pigmentation
Pigmentation is not one condition, and the treatment that clears one pattern can darken another. Match the pattern first, then look at how long you will look different, then look at the price. A treatment that does not address your pattern is not cheap at any price, and the assessment that decides which pattern you have is part of the consultation.
| What is bothering you | The treatment we would use | Days you will look different |
|---|---|---|
| Melasma, or pigmentation that has come back after everything else | Cosmelan Peel | Five to seven |
| Marks left behind by acne, which is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation | Messenger Peel | Two to three, mild |
| Sun spots and age spots on otherwise even skin | Messenger Peel first, Cosmelan only if they hold out | Two to three |
| Uneven tone with rough texture, or sensitive and rosacea prone skin that still needs exfoliation | Messenger Peel | Two to three, mild |
| Dullness and congestion alongside the pigment, or an event to be ready for | Obagi Blue Radiance Peel | None |
| Pigment sitting with textural scarring or skin that has thinned with age | Microneedling, which works mechanically rather than chemically | Two to three |
If melasma is the diagnosis rather than general unevenness, the distinction matters more than the product choice: read Cosmelan compared with standard chemical peels and our melasma guide, and the full comparison of the three peels we use sets them side by side.
What a course looks like, and what it costs
Pigmentation treatment is priced by the session and works in courses, so the number that matters is the course, not the session. We quote the same price whether you book one appointment or six, and the plan is set at the consultation once the pattern is identified.
- Cosmelan Peel, from £650. One application in clinic, then months of prescribed home care. The in clinic phase takes 60 to 90 minutes, flaking runs for about five to seven days, and improvement is usually visible from two to four weeks. The home phase is not optional: it is where the melanin suppression is maintained.
- Obagi Blue Radiance Peel, from £150 a session. Typically three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, so a course at our prices runs from £450 to £900. Thirty to forty five minutes in clinic and no days of looking different.
- Messenger Peel. Typically four to six sessions. Forty five to sixty minutes in clinic, two to three mild days afterwards, and renewal visible within seven to fourteen days. The current session price is on the treatment page.
- Microneedling, from £200 a session. Forty five to sixty minutes, with improvement over two to four weeks, and it pairs with a peel course rather than replacing it.
Two things waste the money whichever route you take. The first is sun: a peel removes part of the layer that was doing your ultraviolet defending, and pigment cells answer that by making more melanin, not less, so broad spectrum SPF 50 every morning is the treatment continuing rather than an extra. Going away in strong sun four days after a treatment is the most reliable way to turn a pigmentation treatment into a pigmentation problem. The second is picking: when flaking starts, the skin underneath is not finished, and lifting it early leaves a mark that outlasts what you came in to treat.
What pigmentation treatment will not fix
This is the part most pigmentation pages leave out, and it is the part that saves people money.
We will not treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have an active cold sore or any skin infection in the area, if you have taken isotretinoin in the last six months, or if you have been in strong sun in the past fortnight. Skin with an already damaged barrier, which usually means over exfoliating at home, needs six to eight weeks of repair before a peel is worth doing at all.
There is also a group who are suitable and should still not book. If what is actually bothering you is volume loss, sagging along the jaw, or lines that sit there when the face is at rest, no peel will reach it, because surface treatments improve the surface. Profhilo and non-surgical skin tightening answer that, and a peel then keeps the surface good afterwards. Pigmentation treatment also does not stop new pigment arriving: without daily sun protection, the pattern returns, and melasma in particular is managed rather than cured.

Questions people ask
Which pigmentation treatment is best for melasma?
Cosmelan is the only one of our peels built for melasma. It combines one application in clinic with a prescribed home phase that suppresses melanin production, it suits all skin types including darker Fitzpatrick tones, and it starts from £650. Melasma is managed rather than cured, so daily broad spectrum SPF 50 is part of the treatment, not an afterthought.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the pattern. Cosmelan is one application in clinic followed by months of home care. An Obagi Blue Radiance course is typically three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart. A Messenger Peel course is typically four to six sessions. The plan is set at the consultation, once we have identified whether the pigment is hormonal melasma, post-inflammatory marks from acne, or sun induced spots.
Will the pigmentation come back?
New pigment can always arrive, which is why sun protection is treated as part of the course rather than as aftercare. Melasma is hormonally driven and is managed rather than cured. Post-inflammatory marks from acne and sun induced spots generally hold once the cause is controlled.
Is there anything a peel will not fix?
Yes. Volume loss, sagging along the jaw and lines that sit there when your face is at rest are not surface problems, so no peel reaches them. We also will not peel you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection in the area, have taken isotretinoin in the last six months, or have been in strong sun in the past fortnight.
